SCA and NERI Group Cooperation Marks a Milestone in Egypt’s Shipbuilding Ambitions
Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has taken a major step in expanding Egypt’s maritime industry by signing a landmark export agreement with Italy’s NERI Group to deliver two high-powered tugboats. This milestone positions Egypt as a rising shipbuilding hub and highlights the growing strength of its marine engineering capabilities.
The signing ceremony, attended by SCA Chairman Osama Rabie, formalized the deal between Misr Tugboats Factory, a subsidiary of the Suez Canal Company for Modern Boats, and the NERI Group. Each tugboat will provide a bollard pull of 90 tonnes, reflecting Egypt’s ability to meet advanced international maritime standards.
This agreement represents Egypt’s first-ever export of locally manufactured tugboats, a major achievement that supports the SCA’s long-term strategy to localize shipbuilding and expand into global marine markets. According to Chairman Osama Rabie, the contract is a vote of confidence in Egyptian shipyards, proving that Egyptian-made vessels can now compete on an international level.
The new tugboats will be constructed based on the Rastar 3200-W design, recognized for its efficiency, stability, and high towing performance in port operations. Delivery to the NERI Group is scheduled for the first quarter of next year, reinforcing the momentum of Egypt’s modern shipbuilding program.
Beyond its industrial value, the deal opens the door for stronger maritime cooperation between Egypt and Italy, and strengthens the “Made in Egypt” brand across the global shipping industry. It also aligns with Egypt’s national vision to develop public-private partnerships and promote sustainable growth in the country’s marine sector.
